The Statistical Office of Kosovo has operated as a professional office since 1948, and has passed through all historic phases of Kosovo.
On August 2nd 1999, SOK restarted its work as an independent and professional institution of public administration in Kosovo. SOK is an executive agency attached to the Ministry of Public Services (MPS).

A statistical regulation ( Regulation 2001/14 ) entered into force 2 July 2001, and is currently being amended.

The Office Mission is to fulfill the needs of users for objective statistical data and analysis in order to support the Kosovo Government and provide proper information for decision-makers and other users in Kosovo.

The Main Objective of the Office is statistical data collection, processing, analyzing and publishing. It also provides evaluations and surveys on demographic, social and economic phenomena in Kosovo society. For achievement of this objective, the Office use methodology, nomenclatures and classifications accepted by international statistical organizations.

Main Principles of work on which the Office relies are:
- Neutrality,
- Objectivity,
- Rationality,
- Professionalism, and
- Confidentiality.

Long-term Objectives of the Office are:
- Improvement of the quality of statistical information,
- Cover the needs of data users,
- Promotion of the statistical system in Kosovo,
- Integration with EU statistical system,
- Implementation of informatics technology,
- Use of sampling and registers in statistical practice,

The Office will increase its cooperation with EUROSTAT through implementation of their methodology and standards in order to build up a compatible statistical system with EU countries. The cooperation with the Statistical Offices of Bosnia, Croatia, Albania, Macedonia, Sweden and Canada has been already established and the Office is open towards further cooperation with statistical offices of other countries and international organizations. WB, UNFPA, IOM, FAO, UNDP, ILO, Sida, CIDA, UNICEF, EU/EAR etc. are already giving valuable contributions to further development of the Statistical Office of Kosovo. The Office has also close and extensive contacts with other departments and agencies in Kosovo e.g. MFE, MEST, MAFRD, MH, MLSW, MTI, MESP, UNMIK Customs Service, OGA and KCA.
